When it comes to identifying the last verse of the Qur’an, scholars have shown considerable disagreement and uncertainty. There are several competing ḥadīths and historical reports. Like all aspects of the Qur’an, identifying its first verse and last one has continued to attract the attention of Muslims scholars down the centuries. In this article, we will focus on the question of the first verse of the Qur'an. Sources have discussed five different views and possibilities about which verse was revealed first. Many Muslims and non-Muslims do not know the difference between the terms “Qur’an” and “mushaf (pronounced mus haf).” They often even confuse them and use them interchangeably. This short article aims at clarifying the difference between the two terms.
