Jihad is one of the fundamentals of the way to Allah. While this Arabic term has become famous for its use in the Qur’an, the concept itself would have been mentioned in every divine Book and would have been inspired to every Prophet. Jihad, therefore, is as valid and essential today as it was at the time of the revelation of the Qur’an fourteen centuries ago. Proper understanding of this concept is necessary not only for understanding the history of Islam, but also Islam itself. Jihad is the Islamic way of living, hence its relevance to the life of every Muslim everywhere at any time. Unfortunately, as we have seen, jihad is highly misunderstood. In this chapter, I will highlight negative effects that the misconception of jihad has had, and examine how to apply the Qur’anic concept of jihad properly in the world today.
