Misinterpreting and misrepresenting jihad as being about only armed jihad ignores occurrences of the term “jihad” in verses where it can only mean peaceful jihad, as in the Meccan verses cited in §5.1. This common misunderstanding indicates also the misreading of references to jihad in Madinite verses as meaning armed jihad when they actually mean jihad in general, both armed and peaceful. Let’s examine how this can happen.
