In order to understand the Qur’anic concept of armed jihad, whose main form is fighting the enemy, it is essential that we study how and why Muslims at the time of the revelation of the Qur’an became involved in wars, and the nature of those wars. While I will cite some explanatory historical information from outside the Qur’an for contextual purposes, the Qur’anic text will be my main source of information.
