Before studying jihad in the Qur'an, we need to look briefly at the historical context in which the Qur'an was revealed and how it was received by people. This knowledge about the early history of Islam helps in understanding jihad, and indeed many other concepts in the Qur'an. It is ultimately helpful for proper understanding of Islam.
