The Qur'an and the Bible
Dr Zakir Naik      06 December 2003
If you glance through the Bible and the Qur’an you may find several points which appear to be exactly the same in both of them, but when you analyse them closely, you realise that there is a difference of ‘chalk and cheese’ between them. Only based on historical details it is difficult for someone who is neither conversant with Christianity or Islam to come to a firm decision as to which of the scriptures is true; however if you verify the relevant passages of both the scriptures against scientific knowledge, you will yourself realize the truth.

a. Creation of the Universe in Six Days

As per the Bible, in the first book of Genesis in Chapter On e, the universe was created in six days and each day is defined as a twenty-four hours period. Even though the Qur’an mentions that the universe was created in six ‘Ayyaams’, ‘Ayyaam’ is the plural of years; this word has two meanings: firstly, it means a standard twenty-four hours period i.e. a day, and secondly, it also means stage, period or epoch which is a very long period of time.

When the Qur’an mentions that the universe was created in six ‘Ayyaams’, it refers to the creation of the heavens and the earth in six long periods or epochs; scientists have no objection to this statement. The creation of the universe has taken billions of years, which proves false or contradicts the concept of the Bible which states that the creation of the Universe took six days of twenty-four hour durations each.

b. Sun Created After the Day

The Bible says in chapter 1, verses 3-5, of Genesis that the phenomenon of day and night was created on the first day of creation of the Universe by God. The light circulating in the universe is the result of a complex reaction in the stars; these stars were created according to the Bible (Genesis chapter 1 verse 14 to 19) on the fourth day. It is illogical to mention the result that is the light (the phenomenon of day and night) was created on the first day of Creation when the cause or source of the light was created three days later. Moreover the existence of evening and morning as elements of a single day is only conceivable after the creation of the earth and its rotation around the sun. In contrast with the contents of the Bible on this issue, the Qur’an does not give any unscientific sequence of Creation. Hence it is absolutely absurd to say that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) copied the passages pertaining to the creation of the universe from the Bible but missed out this illogical and fantastic sequence of the Bible.

c. Creation of the Sun, The Earth and the Moon

According to the Bible, Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses 9 to 13, the earth was created on the third day, and as per verses 14 to 19, the sun and the moon were created on the fourth day. The earth and the moon emanated, as we know, from their original star, the Sun. Hence to place the creation of the sun and the moon after the creation of the earth is contrary to the established idea about the formation of the solar system.

d. Vegetation Created on the third day and Sun on the fourth day

According to the Bible, Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses 11-13, vegetation was created on the third day along with seed-bearing grasses, plants and trees; and further on as per verses 14-19, the sun was created on the fourth day. How is it scientifically possible for the vegetation to have appeared without the presence of the sun, as has been stated in the Bible?

If Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) was indeed the author of the Qur’an and had copied its contents from the Bible, how did he manage to avoid the factual errors that the Bible contains? The Qur’an does not contain any statements which are incompatible with scientific facts.

e. The Sun and the Moon both Emit light

According to the Bible both the sun and the moon emit their own light. In the Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 16 says, “And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night”.

Science tells us today that the moon does not have its own light. This confirms the Qur’anic concept that the light of the moon is a reflected light. To think that 1400 years ago, Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) corrected these scientific errors in the Bible and then copied such corrected passages in the Qur’an is to think of something impossible.

f. Adam the First man on Earth, lived 5,800 years ago

As per the genealogy of Jesus Christ given in the Bible, from Jesus through Abraham (pbuh) to the first man on earth i.e. Adam (pbuh), Adam appeared on the earth approximately 5800 years ago:

i) 1948 years between Adam (pbuh) and Abraham (pbuh)
ii) Approximately 1800 years between Abraham (pbuh) and Jesus (pbuh)
iii) 2000 years from Jesus (pbuh) till today

These figures are further confused by the fact that the Jewish calendar is currently on or about 5800 years old.

There is sufficient evidence from archaeological and anthropological sources to suggest that the first human being on earth was present tens of thousands of years ago and not merely 5,800 years ago as is suggested by the Bible.

The Qur’an too speaks about Adam (pbuh) as the first man on earth but it does not suggest any date or period of his life on earth, unlike the Bible - what the Bible says in this regard is totally incompatible with science.

g. Noah and the Flood

The Biblical description of the flood in Genesis chapter 6, 7 and 8 indicates that the deluge was universal and it destroyed every living thing on earth, except those present with Noah (pbuh) in the ark. The description suggests that the event took place 1656 years after the creation of Adam (pbuh) or 292 years before the birth of Abraham, at a time when Noah (pbuh) was 600 years old. Thus the flood may have occurred in the 21st or 22nd Century B.C.

This story of the flood, as given in the Bible, contradicts scientific evidence from archaelogical sources which indicate that the eleventh dynasty in Egypt and the third dynasty in Babylonia were in existence without any break in civilisation and in a manner totally unaffected by any major calamity which may have occurred in the 21st century B.C. This contradicts the Biblical story that the whole world had been immersed in the flood water. In contrast to this, the Qur’anic presentation of the story of Noah and the flood does not conflict with scientific evidence or archaeological data; firstly, the Qur’an does not indicate any specific date or year of the occurance of that event, and secondly, according to the Qur’an the flood was not a universal phenomenon which destroyed complete life on earth. In fact the Qur’an specifically mentions that the flood was a localised event only involving the people of Noah.

It is illogical to assume that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) had borrowed the story of the flood from the Bible and corrected the mistakes before mentioning it in the Qur’an.

h. Moses and Pharaoh of the Exodus

The story of Moses (pbuh) and the Pharaoh of the Exodus are very much identical in the Qur’an and the Bible. Both scriptures agree that the Pharaoh drowned when he tried to pursue Moses (pbuh) and led the Israelites across a stretch of water that they crossed. The Qur’an gives an additional piece of information in Surah Yunus chapter 10 verse 92: “This day shall We save thee in thy body, that thou mayest be a sign to those who come after thee! But verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Signs!” [Al-Qur’an 10:92]

Dr. Maurice Bucaille, after a thorough research proved that although Rameses II was known to have persecuted the Israelites as per the Bible, he actually died while Moses (pbuh) was taking refuge in Median. Rameses II’s son Merneptah who succeeded him as Pharaoh drowned during the exodus. In 1898, the mummified body of Merneptah was found in the valley of Kings in Egypt. In 1975, Dr. Maurice Bucaille with other doctors received permission to examine the Mummy of Merneptah, the findings of which proved that Merneptah probably died from drowning or a violent shock which immediately preceeded the moment of drowning. Thus the Qur’anic verse that we shall save his body as a sign, has been fulfilled by the Pharaohs’ body being kept at the Royal Mummies room in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

This verse of the Qur’an compelled Dr. Maurice Bucaille, who was a Christian then, to study the Qur’an. He later wrote a book ‘The Bible, the Qur’an and Science’, and confessed that the author of the Qur’an can be no one else besides God Himself. Thus he embraced Islam.

i. Qur’an is a book of Allah

These evidences are sufficient to conclude that the Qur’an was not copied from the Bible, but that the Qur’an is the Furqaan - ‘the Criteria’ to judge right from wrong and it should be used to decipher which portion of the Bible may be considered as the Word of God.

The Qur’an itself testifies in Surah Sajda chapter 32 verse 1 to 3 Alif Laam Meem. (This is) the revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt – from the Lord of the Worlds.Or do they say, ‘He has forged it’? Nay, it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayest admonish a people to whom no warner has come before thee: in order that they may receive guidance.” [Al-Qur’an 32:1-3]

You all should know, that the Qur'an is RIGHT, and you cannot compare any book such as the Bible to it.
With all though respect,
if you actually read the Qur'an AL Kareem, you will realize somethings are better said than the Bible.
so, please. stick to your religion and leave other religions alone.

BUT, Qur'an is 1OO% TRUE and RIGHT.
ALLAH will punish all of you in the day of judgement if you'd like to make an argument with His words.

THANK YOU.
Something to think about
Ali-Zandra       23 Monday, 10 October 2011 17:07
First off it states in the bible that one day to God is as a thousands of years to us. So according to God it was created in six days. Second of course dates and times are going to be off because dates and times have changed. they didnt have leap year, and daylight saving times back then. So yes it will be off when you have people taking away days and times. And I have a question, someone stated that sunday is the wrong day to praise God. Do it really matter what day you praise and worship God? Shouldnt you praise Him everyday?
Genesis-Creation

"Day" as mentioned in the Creation before Sun was created is different than our human's concept of 24 hours a day.As God is not a created being, He is above the constraint of TIME & SPACE experience by human. The "DAY" mentioned thus might suggest the completion of the intended purpose for a period of time or God's own time concept. In the Bible also mentioned that God's concept of time is different than human time concept.
The division of the day into hours was late, probably not common until after the exile. The word used for “hour” is Aramaic שׁעא, she‛ā' (שׁעתּא, sha‛tā'), and does not occur in the Old Testament until the Book of Daniel (Dan_4:33; Dan_5:5), and even there it stands for an indefinite period for which “time” would answer as well.

The term “day” (יום, yōm) was in use from the earliest times, as is indicated in the story of the Creation (Gen 1). It there doubtless denotes an indefinite period, but is marked off by “evening and morning” in accordance with what we know was the method of reckoning the day of 24 hours, i.e. from sunset to sunset.

The sun and the moon emit their own light
Humanity       20 Sunday, 04 September 2011 16:24
Dear brothers and sisters we can not find the truth by entering past by time machine so the only option we have, is to judge the truth based on scientific facts and almight knows we humanbeing wil fight each other so i bleave almighty doesn't speak which fails to today's science becouse almighty only created this world and if almighty is the creator of sun and moon then how can almighty say that moon emit their own light in the bible so an educated person can still judge the truth in this contraversial period and Almighty mentioned in the quran in 1400 years ago when there were not any proved science that moon doesnt emit its own light but reflects and finally i would like to conclude that Almighty knows everything and today's science could not disprove even a singe verse of quran and i wish you study sincerely /GOD BLESS U ALL

Silly author- don't speak unless you are fully informed. It is a well known fact that the creation story is imaginative. It was used to explain how powerful God was. The Quaran doesn't have amazing facts- it just doesn't include any facts that counter science. Jeez get it right man..
Pls. no controversy, do cooperation
Enamul       18 Saturday, 27 August 2011 15:41
Niether bible, nor quran or any other religious books directly written by the Almighty rather all were written by human being. They used their knowledge and commonsence of their time.So its really a stupidity to do controversy mentioning date, time or sequences. It's a great truth that all these books came to light to lead the human being on the way of peace and progress. Thats why we should read all these books to find out the best ways of life and live. And we should cooperate each other what are the similarities among these books which are lead to a unique religion-PEACE!

i have somthing to say. now ive done lots of research about this and similar subjects. somthing which fasinated me is the fact that the bible has been changed alot by the roman empire and that the whole story of jesus in the bible was takin from the story of horus, an eygiption king/sun god, and that is why christians worship on sunday so christians have been tricked into worshipin the sun. and jesus being son of god was actualy a vote by human after his death.

don't beleave me?? do the reaserch. so it turns out that the koran is right, the bible was changed. and there is also a documentary called "the arrivals" which talks about similar subjects and also this. very interesting documentary and everybody who was who want to know about the compariosion of religons and all that should also watch it.
Please explain
David Cohen       16 Sunday, 21 August 2011 15:23
1. Jewish tradition predates Jesus & Mohammad;
2. The majority of the Bible texts have been found, for example, near the Dead Sea, dating from the 1st. cent. BCE to 1st cent CE- and these texts are almost identical to those that we have to-day; All predate Mohammad by hundreds of years;
3. How is it possible for anything relating to the Biblical materials in the Quran to be in conflict with those materials?
4. Irrespective of what one may believe, re the contents of the respective religions (and no doubt there are positive elements to the various religions)- clearly later materials that refer incorrectly to the earlier- are due to muddled, inaccurate receipt.
A 24 hour day
Rabin Jacob       15 Friday, 29 July 2011 19:23
As per the Bible, in the first book of Genesis in Chapter On e, the universe was created in six days and each day is defined as a twenty-four hours period.
No where in this chapter does it claim that the day is 24 hours long.

A day was we now know it is a 24 hour period. The rotation of the earth on its axis. If there was no sun (Sun created on day 4) where is the basis of the 24 hour day.

book of God or book of contradiction
yahya muhammad yahya. kano, nigeria       9 Tuesday, 30 November 2010 12:58
By common sense one should know, contradiction can not be attributed to a book of God. that is to say there is no contradiction in the Qur'an but many exist in the Bible.
any thing
raven       8 Tuesday, 12 October 2010 09:46
God is powerful.. plants can grow with out the sun if God commanded them to grow... does Adam needed a mother to be born? those things are creation remember, and after that all things just follows the cycle of life. 1 day is of creation is not 24 hrs. in 2 Peter 3 verse 8 it is written that "But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." ...

Islamic-Replies       7 Thursday, 13 May 2010 04:26
Steve, you CANNOT use Genesis 2 to prove your case because it contradicts the account in Genesis 1. Before I get to that, it CLEARLY says in Genesis 1:9-13 that vegetations was created on 3rd day and the day AFTER it was created the Sun. Plants can't survive without sunlight, and God knew that.

Surely, the Christians believe that God would know that the plants need sun, so why this illogical sequence? Some Christians will say: "If it is a 24 period difference between when the Sun and plants where created, why can't the plants survive for one 24 hour day?"

If Christians say that, that means it is implying that the Universe was created in six 24 hour days, which is unscientific since science tells us that the Universe cannot be created in six 24 hour periods, since it took millions of years to create.

Moving on:

> In Genesis 1:11-13 plants and veg were created on day 3 and in Genesis 1:27-31, Adam is created on day 6.

> In Genesis 2:4-7, Adam is created BEFORE the plants and veg.

When was adam & plants and veg created? Was Adam created AFTER plants and veg as in Genesis 1, or was he created BEFORE plants and veg as in Genesis 2?

You can't say "both don't give a chronological order," because you have no proof for this, and tring to change the text.

So, thanks for bringing Genesis 2 up steve, you've showed that there is a contradiction in the very first 2 chapters of your Bible. Take a guess at what the order is, Christians.
d. Vegetation Created on the third day and Sun on the fourth day
Steve       6 Wednesday, 02 December 2009 12:47
Come on if you are going to waste your time on a putting together a website with these types of arguments, at least have little bit of knowledge. Did you stop reading the Bible at Gen 1! If you would have at least read on to Gen 2 you might have found that the vegetation created was seed in the ground and God would cause it to grow when certain conditions were right. Try reading the rest of the Bible too and then you will be putting together Christian websites.

Salam,
Let me say it is illogical to say that prophet Muhammad borrowed the story in the Holy Bible and change it.I want to challenge all those that has this impression to know that Prophet Muhammad Cannot read and cannot Write. Qur'an was revealed to him from Almighty Allah through angel Gabriel Alaihissalam. So he who cannot read and write where can he copy something and change it? We pray to Almighty Allah to guide us to the straight path.Allah knows better We will see the diffrence in the hereafter. Thank you.
the significance of bible dates
alex owen       4 Wednesday, 22 July 2009 13:05
i dont think that the significance of dates can realy be used as any form of critisisum of religion through sientific dating as recent physics has proven that time is relitive to the person who percives it and can be afected by almost everything so who has the right to question the time scale god dictates to humanity as it may be different to our human perceptions of it but who said that the world wasnt created in seven days to gods perception of all things

Bible Infalibility Concept
Abdul Ahad       1 Tuesday, 01 July 2008 07:35
asalamu alikum wb to all,

I was looking for information about the Bible when i noticed Bible Infalibility in wekipedia, when i opened it- it said:

"Biblical infallibility is the theological term to describe the belief that the Bible is free from errors on issues of faith and practice, while minor possible contradictions in history (or geography, science etc.) can be overlooked as insignificant to its spiritual purpose"

Evangelical Christians generally accept the findings of textual criticism, and nearly all modern translations, including the popular New International Version, work from a Greek New Testament based on modern textual criticism.

Since this means that the manuscript copies are not perfect, inerrancy is only applied to the original autographs (the manuscripts written by the original authors) rather than the copies. For instance, the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy says, We affirm that inspiration, strictly speaking, applies only to the autographic text of Scripture

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_inerrancy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_infallibility

They are controversial regarding the infalibility of the Bible. which is disproved by dr.Zakir Naik

thanks
